JAZZ’AFRO SUNDAYS @ THE BARN
Allegro was started in 2008 by vocalists with an extensive musical background whose wish was to achieve something more with their vocal talent, broadening their musical knowledge and the desire for the freedom to experiment with classical sounds uniquely flavouring them with current popular songs.
Members of Allegro Siphosethu Lungu, Siseko Lungu, Bonakele Edward Mqubuli, Zimisele Mqubuli, Futhi Zuma and Wongeka Mbeki to date have performed at corporate functions, weddings, graduation ceremonies, schools and old age homes.
In 2011 Allegro recorded a demo and plan to record a full album in the near future. Allegro’s producer Bonakele Edward Lungu is a both a practitioner and choral expert. He is both a singer and Vice-Conductor of the award-winning national championship outfit Matthews Singers. He is a conductor of the Alex Matikinca Voices and has just released a debut CD entitled ‘I Am A Winner’. Bonakele Edward Mnqubuli is an active music trainer who travels throughout South Africa training School and Church choirs. In 2003 Bonakele led Nxanel’imfundo choir to the finals of the Tirisano Schools Music Competition. In 2013 he worked his magic and won 5 trophies in Bloemfontein with Home Affairs Choir. He led the Siyaya SSETA Choir to victory in 2008 at a music competition in Durban. “Mqhubuli” was selected to perform in the South African remix version of “Say What You Will’ by the award winning Canadian Singer- Songwriter Justin Hinds at the 2011 MTV Awards in Johannesburg.
Bonakele is affectionately known as “Teddy Bear” by his adoring fans from Emmanuel Heaven Community Radio Station (EHFM) where he has his own show.
Bonakele, a protégé of Linda Grootboom his Operatic Voice trainer during his time with La Music, has worked on various productions adding to his versatility. In 2010 Bonakele worked in the production staged at the PE Opera House starring Nomhle Nkonyeni called ‘The Last Dance’, in 2015 he worked on another PE Opera House musical titled Inde Le Ndlela which premiered at the National Arts Festival. As a person living with disability, Bonakele does not let his disability get in the way of chasing his dreams.
